Good waders are an investment. Cared for properly, they’ll be with you for years. Neglected, they last a season. The difference comes down to a few simple habits.
After every day on the water
- Dry, don’t store wet. Hang the waders fully dry inside and out — hanging, not bundled up. Trapped moisture is the most common cause of odour and delamination.
- Store cool and dark. UV light and heat attack the membranes. Not a car boot in summer.
Regularly
- Clean gently. Clear water and a soft cloth are usually enough. For odours, use a technical-membrane detergent — never fabric softener.
- Refresh the water repellency. When water stops beading off, a DWR spray for breathable materials brings it back.
Fix small leaks immediately
A damp foot doesn’t have to be the end. Small holes seal reliably with the right repair adhesive — the sooner the better.
Once a year
Check the seams, neoprene socks and zips. Spot the wear early and you’ll never be stuck with leaking waders on the first fine spring day.
